AI will make us reconsider the idea of working for a living

Hey my friends, this is the article 69 / 1000! For those who don’t know me, my name is Selim Chehimi and I’m an engineering student. I’ve been programming for 7 years now so you can tell that I really enjoy that. Those 7 years of programming lead me to Artificial Intelligence. My dream is to build an AI Startup so that’s the reason why I’m sharing this article with you. I hope you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it.

There is a huge interest in what technology might be doing to our jobs. Nowadays, the big question is whether AI and Automation will take our jobs or not.

What we misunderstand is that AI is growing at an exponential rate. Consequently, the gap between the working age population and the number of jobs is growing up. Artificial Intelligence will end up doing all our jobs – both cognitive and manual. We are probably way too much optimistic about the impact of AI on employment. In fact, we’re seeing digital tools displaying skills that they never had before. That’s the reason why it’s different this time: this era has nothing in common with the era of the Industrial Revolution.

This time, most jobs are vulnerable to be replaced by Artificial Intelligence especially lawyers, doctors, architects, and journalists. Most journal editors are now using algorithms that can write perfect articles shaped to their need. You might think that it’s ok because these AI can do only specific task whereas human workers are more generalists. Well, if we look at IBM’s Watson which can play the game of Jeopardy (the presenter give you the answer, you find the question) better than any humans and can also diagnose people like a doctor, we understand that this statement is not true anymore. It’s the same thing for Siri, we take it for granted but Siri can understand us and do a lot of tasks. Also, we should consider that these AI will not be 2 to 3 times better in 6 years but 16 times better (given Moore’s law). Another decent example would be self-driving cars. In 2020, AI will drive your cars and we’ll see a bunch of them on the road. The problem is that so many people are driving trucks or a taxi for a living. It’s pretty much given that some of them are going to be affected by this Technology.

Artificial Intelligence will probably lead to the death of capitalism. We’re on the verge of a new economy which will be incredibly productive but will not need a lot of human workers. Managing this transition will be the hardest as we’ll have to reconsider the idea of working for a living.
