When AI is applied to healthcare, a bunch of new opportunities for patients and hospitals comes to life. 2018 may be the year of Artificial Intelligence. In fact, AI is working well and is solving many problems for the healthcare industry. Today, I would like to discuss with you about a recent news: an algorithm that can predict death.
The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of a new algorithm that can predict a bunch of things such as heart attack and respiratory failure. This algorithm is called the Wave Clinical Platform and has been created by Excel Medical which is a medical tech company working in Florida. WAVE is very effective, so it could be useful to handle the surprisingly high number of unexpected death.
This algorithm has been created for a good reason: there is a lack in the number of physicians and nurses in hospitals. Consequently, it’s almost impossible to follow-up with the vitals of a patient continuously (let’s be realistic: a human cannot and shouldn’t have to do it). According to the tech company: “We don’t have enough physicians or nurses, and we have an aging population who are sicker and who need more resources and services”.
This is the reason why this new algorithm named WAVE step in. The AI system can continuously check the vitals of a patient in order to detect subtle changes. Moreover, it will do it in a smart way. As an example, let’s suppose that a patient has a spike in blood pressure. The main point is that a spike in blood pressure may not be indicative of a serious threat. However, if this spike is mixed with a drop in the patient’s respiratory rate, that could be significant, so the AI will immediately send an alert that will directly go to the staff’s smartphones. In other words, the algorithm can monitor the vitals in relation to one another.
As you can see, this technology will be very effective in the future. I’ve been to hospital recently, and I was really shocked by the lack of technological tools. It seems that we are still in the industrial age. AI will revolutionize the healthcare industry: all those algorithms are just the beginning. For example, a recent study led by Stanford researchers demonstrates how their algorithm can successfully predict unexpected death in nearly 90 percent of the cases.
Artificial Intelligence is already proving very useful in many areas of medicine, and it will produce great benefits for human health and longevity, but also scientific breakthroughs, space exploration, and many others. The creation of a Superintelligence would rank among the most important transition in history. Let’s get prepared for 2018 😉
