How Neuroscience and AI can save our Educational System

Hey my friends, this is the article 79 / 1000! For those who don’t know me, my name is Selim Chehimi and I’m an engineering student. I’ve been programming for 7 years now so you can tell that I really enjoy that. Those 7 years of programming lead me to Artificial Intelligence. My dream is to build an AI Startup so that’s the reason why I’m sharing this article with you. I hope that you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it.


As always, let’s get straight to the point. Our Educational System is tremendously ineffective and this is madness. The problem is that it’s missing the future so that’s the reason why so many students are left behind. Today, we’re going to discuss how Neuroscience and Technology (especially AI) can save our Educational System.

If we apply basic neuroscience principles to our educational system, it would change millions of lives. To begin with, I must explain to you why there is a contradiction between how we teach and how the brain naturally works. It comes down to one simple thing: humans are hardwired to learning. It may sound surprising, but it’s just the truth: humans are learners and find joy in learning.

We enjoy learning because the brain releases endorphin and it does so with an inverted u-shape with respect to familiarity:

  • The things that are too familiar are boring.
  • The unfamiliar things are intimidating so not very enjoyable.
  • In between, it’s highly pleasurable. Both endorphin and dopamine are released which makes learning addictive.

This is how our brain reacts to learning. Consequently, humans are hardwired to find learning extremely pleasurable.

The problem with our current educational system is that most students are either at the beginning or at the end of the inverted u-curve. Very few students are in the middle of the curve. As a result, 63% of students are disengaged (from a study in North America but I’m convinced that it’s the same thing everywhere).

We don’t just need to reform our educational system but to transform it completely. We must personalize our educational system to every single student. The problem is that being a teacher is already a stressful occupation so how could teachers do to personalize teaching? The key lies in Technology and especially in Artificial Intelligence.

Nowadays, students are cramming for an exam and then forgot all they’ve learned the next few days (sounds familiar, right?).

The solution lies in spaced repetition. In other words, refreshing the information when it’s about to be forgotten. There are much more chances that the student will memorize what he learned.

Spaced Repetition or Recall Learning can only work if you know what each student knows and doesn’t know. As a result, the teacher will be able to present the exact material at exactly the right time. Yes, it’s impossible from a teacher’s perspective, but easy from a Technology point of view. In fact, we can do even more, a Generative AI would know what the student knows and doesn’t know and would create new materials shaped to the level of the student.

We can push education to a whole new level. At the risk of oversimplifying, Integrative AI is the mix of Generative AI with others Technology like Virtual Reality, simulated world or gesture recognition. If we successfully put these technologies into our educational system, then we’ll unlock the hidden potential of every student.
