Hey my friends, this is the article 78 / 1000! For those who don’t know me, my name is Selim Chehimi and I’m an engineering student. I’ve been programming for 7 years now so you can tell that I really enjoy that. Those 7 years of programming lead me to Artificial Intelligence. My dream is to build an AI Startup so that’s the reason why I’m sharing this article with you. I hope you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it.
Today we are going to discuss if AI and Automation will cause mass unemployment. Let’s get straight to the point: yes, anything that we humans do to make money will one day be done by AI. Jobs are being decimated and they are not going back.
Machines are demonstrating skills that they never ever had before. This time, most jobs are at risk to be replaced by Artificial Intelligence. Let’s look at some examples:
Drivers are the most likely to be affected! Vehicles like taxis and buses will be automated, possibly by the early 2020s. In 2020, AI will probably drive your car and we’ll see a bunch of them on the road. The problem is that so many people are driving a truck or a taxi for a living so many of them are going to be affected by this Technology.
Amazon Prime Air is a drone delivery system which anticipates package deliveries under five pounds in 30 minutes or less. This Technology will impact delivery workers in the future.
AI bots are already writing articles related to business and sports for clients like Forbes. Also, many experts are predicting that 90% of journalism will be automated by 2030.
“Social robots” are being used to help teach children about the appropriate social behavior. Milo is a robot that teaches kids about social interactions and it has proven to be more efficient than humans!
Artists will also have to compete with robots. Here is a mind-blowing video where RobotArt is drawing Albert Einstein.
AND MANY OTHERS (DOCTORS, LAWYERS, ARCHITECTS, TEACHERS, BARMAN etc).
Artificial Intelligence will probably lead to the death of capitalism. We’re on the verge of a new economy which will be incredibly productive but will not need a lot of human workers. Managing this transition will be the hardest because we’ll have to reconsider the idea of working for a living. If we don’t work anymore, how can we earn an income?
At this point, I must present you the idea of the universal basic income. It was first created by Thomas Payne and defended by great minds like Martin Luther King. It implies free money for everyone and it’s enough to pay your basic need: food, refuge, and education! Moreover, everyone would get it, you can consider it as a right, not a favor.
Our biggest challenge will be to find the meaning of life when work will no longer be necessary. Some believe that we’ll be free from work, others believe that work is essential to human being. What about you? Tell me what you think in the comment!
