Hey my friends, this is the article 50 / 1000! For those who don’t know me, my name is Selim Chehimi and I’m an engineering student. I’ve been programming for 7 years now so you can tell that I really enjoy that. Those 7 years of programming lead me to Artificial Intelligence. I really want to be involved in AI so that’s the reason why I’m sharing this article with you. I hope you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it. Today we will be talking about why the Internet of Things and AI are linked together.
To begin with, I would like to explain to you what is the Internet of Things (IoT). At the risk of oversimplifying, the IoT represent all the devices and sensors connected to the Internet. According to IDC’s Digital Universe Update, the number of connected devices will expand from 20 billion today to 30 billion by 2020 to 80 billion by 2025. All those devices are creating data so we’re seeing a tremendous expansion of the data being created by them. This is a huge problem because we must find a way to know how to analyze this vast amount of data. As you can imagine, humans can’t do this job because the amount of data is overwhelming. Consequently, we need to find another way!
Machine Learning is the way to go
Let’s resume the situation: we need to analyze a huge amount of data produced by the Internet of Things, humans can’t do this job and today 99.5 % of digital data is never analyzed. So, what is the solution? The answer is Artificial Intelligence and more specifically Machine Learning. Machine Learning is a subfield of AI that deals with the construction and study of systems that can learn from data without explicitly programmed instructions. It’s already present in our life and I’ve written an Article about it if you want to know more: http://selimchehimi.com/you-are-already-using-artificial-intelligence/
Nowadays, all businesses have an increasing amount of data (structured or unstructured) due to the IoT. All they have to do is feed it to AI Systems and let them make sense of it. Machine Learning is really the way to go if we want to deal with this huge amount of data. We can affirm that the IoT is useless without AI and Machine Learning because if you’re not using them you can’t make sense of data created by the IoT.
