Will the number of jobs go up?

Hey my friends, this is the article 85 / 1000! For those who don’t know me, my name is Selim Chehimi and I’m an engineering student. I’ve been programming for 7 years now so you can tell that I really enjoy that. Those 7 years of programming lead me to Artificial Intelligence. My dream is to build an AI Startup so that’s the reason why I’m sharing this article with you. I hope that you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it.

What’s up guys, I hope that you’re doing well! I’m currently in Tunisia for holidays and as you can imagine, the weather is hot. During these holidays, I will try to produce better quality content. I’m trying to figure out how to make it more fun to read and more informative. Now, I’m sure that I will keep up with the 1000 Articles, it’s becoming a habit and I also enjoy writing. Consequently, I want these Articles to be a kind of personal diary of my journey. Anyways, let’s get to the Article. Today we’ll talk about automation and unemployment.

Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, spoke at the Viva Technology conference in Paris, arguing that AI and the increase in global connectivity would drive humanity forward. Schmidt is convinced that the world will be more interconnected, stronger and that we are entering an era of knowledge sharing. Consequently, computers will make people smarter and, as a result, the number of jobs will go up, not down.

If you have watched my YouTube videos, (if not, you should!) you know my opinion about this topic. In my opinion, Artificial Intelligence will cause mass unemployment. I think that most jobs are at risk to be affected by AI: doctors, lawyers, drivers, delivery workers etc. I say that because machines are demonstrating skills that they never ever had before and most importantly because data suggests it. If we trust the data, 50% of global job activities could be automated by current technologies. To fix this problem, we need to face these realities. We must retrain our workforce for new industries, we must change the way we educate the next generation. Maybe we should also entertain new economic model like the Universal Basic Income (UBI)? There are a lot of possibilities and it can hurt our society only if we refuse to adapt.

Artificial Intelligence is amazing, it’s philosophical, economical, technological etc. Our world is changing every single day – what drives this technological change is AI. Machine Learning is offering a world of opportunities for a host of industries. All businesses will soon be driven by AI. Schmidt added that “The age of intelligence (our century) will allow you to build a company that’s far more efficient”.
